How To Do Kickboxing For Beginners
The best way for beginners to start kickboxing is by getting familiar with the three (3) main types of kicks:
Lead Kick (Side Kick)
- Bend your lead leg at the knee
- Shift your center of gravity over your rear leg
- Kick your lead leg straight out at a 90-degree angle from your body
*This is aimed at the opponent’s torso
Rear Kick (Turning Kick)
- Bend your rear leg at the knee
- Shift your center of gravity over your lead leg
- Rotate from your core over your lead leg to swing your rear leg in front of you
- Rotate your hips to twist your leg so your shin would be making the impact
Hook Kick
- Bend your lead leg at the knee
- Shift your center of gravity over your rear leg
- Lift the lead leg and straighten to kick at an upward angle
*This movement is similar to a lead kick but is aiming at the chest instead of the torso
Keep in mind that there are a lot of variations on these kicks, and plenty of other types to learn as you train. Two great ways to get comfortable using these different kicks is to watch how professional fighters perform each move and to practice kickboxing combos on your own.
